Milliamps to Amps (mA to A) Converter
Milliamps to amps converts a small current by dividing by 1000, because one amp is exactly 1000 milliamps. Type milliamps or amps in either box and the other updates at once, with the formula shown, so you can check phone chargers, sensors, LEDs and meter readings quickly.
Milliamps to amps
250 mA = 0.25 A
A = mA ÷ 1000 → 250 ÷ 1000 = 0.25 A.
How to convert mA to A
The prefix “milli” means one thousandth (BIPM, The International System of Units, 9th edition, 2019). So 1 mA = 0.001 A, and amps = milliamps ÷ 1000. To go back, multiply amps by 1000.
Worked example: 250 mA
250 ÷ 1000 = 0.25 A. In the other direction, 0.25 A × 1000 = 250 mA.

Worked example: a 2400 mA charger
2400 ÷ 1000 = 2.4 A. At 5 V that is 5 × 2.4 = 12 W of power, which is the formula in amps to watts for DC.

Where small currents show up
Meters often read in milliamps for sensors, control loops (a 4–20 mA signal is a common industrial standard), LED strings and battery drain. Fuses and chargers are usually labeled in amps, so the conversion helps match them. Microamps are a further step down: 1 µA = 0.001 mA = 0.000001 A.

Frequently asked questions
How many amps is 1 mA?
1 mA is 0.001 A, one thousandth of an amp.
How do I convert mA to A?
Divide the milliamps by 1000. For example, 500 mA ÷ 1000 = 0.5 A.
How many mA is 1 A?
1 A is 1000 mA.
Is mAh the same as mA?
No. mA is current; mAh is charge, current multiplied by time. 1 mAh = 3.6 coulombs.
